The Nested Self: How Russian dolls illustrate Winnicott's nursing triad.

As Mother's Day approaches, the image of a Russian "matryoshka" nesting doll comes to mind– a beautiful representation of the multifaceted nature of motherhood. 

Just as each doll is contained within another, we are initially "nested" in our mother's care, receiving warmth, comfort, and nurture. Historically symbolizing motherhood, fertility, and family, these dolls remind us that mothers are the very heart of the home, providing a comforting "nest" for growth.

The outermost figure, often a mother, contains within her the essence of family. This echoes Winnicott's concept of a "nursing triad," which describes, “as a mother holds her baby- there needs to be someone holding the mother” (Casement, 1985). This emphasizes that a mother's ability to nurture her child is often contingent on having her own supportive ecosystem – a "holder of the holder." Whether this support comes from a partner, extended family, or community resources, it underscores the vital network that empowers mothers in their multifaceted roles. 

This month, we honour the incredible, layered contributions of mothers, both to those who had support and those who mothered single-handedly, creating the nests where we thrive. We see and appreciate your strength and dedication!
