A functioning family is a well-oiled machine, and the oil is its routines. Rather than being rigid and uninspired, family routines are the flexible, patterned behaviours that give life its shape and meaning. They are instrumental goals, like preparing dinner or tackling chores, that provide a clear and supportive structure. This framework is particularly beneficial for the health and development of younger family members, who rely on consistency to grow and learn (Fiese et al., 2002).


In today's fast-paced world, the demands on families are immense, making it harder to coordinate these essential routines. Yet, these shared patterns are vital for more than just getting things done. They are the primary way families strengthen their bonds, instill a shared identity, and maintain a sense of order (Segal, 2004). When a family gathers for a shared meal, for instance, they're not just eating—they're creating a space for communication and modelling positive behaviour, reinforcing the ties that bind them (Fiese et al., 2002).


In times of stress or change—a common experience in today's society—routines become a lifeline. They offer a sense of order and control, which can be an essential anchor for mental well-being (Segal, 2004). For someone grappling with a health challenge, or even just the daily pressures of life, clinging to a meaningful routine can provide a sense of stability and normalcy. This is why routines can serve as a gauge for mental health, helping individuals maintain a connection to their lives and to society (Koome, Hocking &Sutton, 2012).


Ultimately, our routines are a testament to the human need for purpose and belonging. They are a tangible way to create a supportive and protective environment where every family member feels a sense of worth. By consciously upholding these small, everyday habits, we build an "enveloping framework" that gives our daily existence shape and purpose, ensuring that our families remain resilient and connected no matter what challenges come our way (Koome et al., 2012, p. 320).
